Shared Education project with Donaghy PS

Day 1: Parkanaur Forest Park – Orienteering

P6 and P7 pupils together with P7 pupils from Donaghy PS have an orienteering challenge to complete together against the clock. Pupils had to orienteer through the forest using only a map and a stopwatch.  Each group had an hour to find as many of the clues as possible.  The clues all learned us more about where we live and the different cultures in our community.  We learned about religion, flags, sports, music and dance and other everyday representations of the different cultures and beliefs within our community.

We had to record the code from the symbols we found when orienteering through the forest.

We completed team building activities to get to know the pupils from the other schools. We built trust and friendship as we worked together.  We learned about each other’s strengths.

Day 2: Donaghy PS

We are learning to understand more about the cultures that live together in Northern Ireland. We are familiar with many of the religious and political symbols of the 2 main cultures within Northern Ireland; The Green Catholic and The Orange Protestant cultures.

We work together to share what we already know and learn more about where these symbols came from to understand and respect the different cultures and beliefs.

We play games together to display how traditions in Northern Ireland treat each other. We learn of how behaviours and attitudes can result in hurting others feelings.  We learn more about respect and how individuals each have individual beliefs and opinions.

Day 3: Drumming

In our school today we hosted Donaghy PS pupils. Together we participated in a drumming session with Joe.  Joe learned us about the different types of African drums he had with him for the pupils to play.  He explained that drums, just like us where all different.  They made different sounds, they were different shapes and sizes, they were made from different materials and they were made in different parts of Africa.  He also explained how the drums could all be played together to make tribal music.  We were able to show understanding of how we were like the drums, how we were all very different but that together we could play music.
