The Primary 7 class participated in the Irish News Critical Literacy Project created by Saint Mary's College Belfast. Over an 8 week period the pupils developed their understanding of newspapers through critically analysing sections and sub-sections, articles, adverts, headings, and language associated with newspapers. They became junior journalists, creating their own fictional articles, and adopted the role of editor when evaluating other people's articles. The pupils then created their own newspaper "Cool School News" arranging their articles like a real newspaper would. They had a real taste for what life would be like in a news room, with many heated debates centred around editorial decisions, agreeing on order of articles and titles for the newspaper, but they were able to reach an agreeement just in time for printing.
